12/1/2023 0 Comments Character sketch writingHelen was blind and deaf for the rest of her life once the fever passed. At the age of nineteen months, Helen fell critically unwell with brain fever. Helen's mother was Arthur's second wife, Kate Adams, who was many years Helen's junior. He was a captain in the Confederate army. Keller, her father, was a descendent of Caspar Keller, a Swiss immigrant. Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, on June 27, 1880. The brief descriptions frequently focus on the person's more unusual or humorous characteristics. Study (discreetly) a person in a public place-at a bus stop or a library or a coffee shop-and answer a number of questions about this person then write a character sketch.Hint: A character sketch is a rough-and-ready rendering or thumbnail depiction of a person that captures, in a nutshell, that person's physical characteristics, psychological traits, and so on. Or, with an especially eager and creative class: Write a Character Sketch about a stranger. Example: Character A and Character B meet (on a bus, on a plane, in the street). Meanwhile, that library of character sketches could be useful for further creative writing activities. The activity also encourages learners to consider editing and proofreading in a specific and meaningful way. At higher levels, we even studied a few poems from Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology. The class can do dictogloss activities with a number of character sketches. It justifies working on precise language and vocabulary-building, not only for adjectives but also for verbs and adverbs. While the product is definitive, the activity is remarkably expansive. The product is short and manageable, which is good for the learners, and it produces text that is mostly objective to assess, which is helpful for the instructor. In fact, some of their character sketches were so strong and vivid that they stayed in my memory! My learners have gained so much confidence in their creative writing. Writing a character sketch, while managing to skirt all the trouble with narrative, exposes learners to creative writing in a way that is controlled without being overwhelming. Learners then swap their text with a classmate for peer feedback with a proofreading checklist. Otherwise, it’s useful to elicit a few different strategies that some learners might not know-such as checking spelling and grammar in Gmail or Microsoft Word or even. First, I prepare a checklist of a few things to focus on. Third, while we continue working on building vocabulary and brainstorming, learners assemble their character sketches.įinally, we spend a little time on proofreading. I show an image and write 5 password-style adjectives and we play “Guess My Adjectives.” I also share pairs of images (things that are similar, but different) and learners create a list of 5 adjectives for both images-words that would describe only one of those paired images. Meanwhile, we work on a number of simultaneous activities building adjectives and precise language.
